If you take a minute to watch one of the many news segments on our news shows today, chances are you’re going to see one about the fast food wars. This clip, for instance, highlights the $5 battle being waged right in your backyard.

From the Today show to Suze Orman, the experts are giving tips on how to cut back in today’s economy, such as limiting how much you eat out. It’s advice that only hurts independent restaurants. The restaurant industry is the No. 1 employer in the United States, and we can’t afford to eat into that job market.

While the fast food guys duke it out, you have an opportunity to offer something to your customers who don’t want to go the way of fast food. Is there something different you can offer? The idea isn’t to discount yourself out of business, but to create and/or highlight the items on your menu that are a value to your customers and still make you money.
