FDA Offers Warning – Tomatoes Associated with Salmonellosis Outbreak
Authored by David Scott Peters
Talk about crisis waiting to happen, this is it! If you’ve sidestepped the recent salmonellosis crisis up to now, it’s time for you to face it head on.
The FDA released a warning this weekend that all restaurants and sellers of raw tomatoes discontinue the use of raw red plum, raw red Roma and raw red round tomato varieties in all menu items, if your tomatoes weren’t from specific regions.
Please check with your distributor to find out where your tomatoes came from. If they’re not from one of the following regions, find out how to return your tomatoes to the distributor and get your money back:
- Arkansas
- California
- Georgia
- Hawaii
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Belgium
- Canada
- Dominican Republic
- Guatemala
- Israel
- Netherlands
- Puerto Rico
Keep in mind you can still offer tomatoes and use tomatoes in your menu items. Just make sure they are of the cherry, grape or on-the-vine varieties, which have been cleared by the FDA.
Don’t risk any reports of illness coming back to your restaurant, especially now that the FDA has issued these warnings.
